Stuxnet and Beresford

Beresford is not a new computer virus but a talented security researcher who did some work on Siemens S7 PLCs that he presented yesterday at Black Hat. My friend Dale Peterson covered the story and its background in detail over at his blog. Dale’s report and analysis, drawing a convincing line from Stuxnet to some basic stuff such as stopping an S7 or an easter egg in the controller’s OS,  is a must-read for anybody in control system security. My bottom line is: The whole ICS security game is not about technology. It’s all about politics. And we in this community have any reason to ask if our politics over the last decade might have been severely flawed.
